Its water comes from the Main Barton Spring which is the fourth largest spring within the state. There are three underground springs around the pool which supply 68 to 70 degrees of water year-round. The pool is big enough to support the needs of serious swimmers and people that would just like to cool off. It even attracts tourists all around the country and even the world and it has set a record of 800,000 to 1.5 million visitors in recent years. Barton Springs Pool is open to plenty of activities, however, take note of what is prohibited within the grounds. This is also to preserve the wildlife and its habitat.
2. Kayak, Paddleboards, Canoes
Get a little exercise while sightseeing around the area. You can rent kayaks, standup paddleboards, and canoes in the area. The movement of the water is easy to navigate even for beginners.
3. Picnic
There are large amounts of picnic benches at the entrance to Barton Springs. There are also benches around the area. Picnicking spots are prevalent in the area where you can bring your own blanket. You can also enjoy people and dog watching on the edge of Great Lawn, although you might get distracted with your meal when it comes to enthusiastic pets.
Those who like shopping and dining will find many local businesses and iconic Austin restaurants and coffee shops in this area. The neighborhood also has many nightclubs and live music venues.
If it’s the first Sunday in March you’ll want to take go to the Zilker Kite Festival where you’ll revel in hundreds of colorful kites dotting the big Texas sky. If you find yourself looking for an activity on a December evening, take the tykes to see the magnificent 155-foot-tall Zilker Tree, lit up bright with more than 3,000 lights. If it’s literally any other time of the year between 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., take a ride on the Zilker Zephyr, a miniature train that takes a 20-minute tour of the park.
Zilker Park also hosts one of the biggest events during fall. Austin City Limits Music Festival is a reflection of Austin as the "Live Music Capital of the World". Thousands of local and international attendees and musicians gather to celebrate their love for music during the first two weekends in October. Now during December, enjoy the dazzling lights in the park with Austin Trail of Lights. This is one of the largest holiday traditions you shouldn't miss!
If all that is not enough, downtown is just a few blocks away. Public bus routes come through the neighborhood and offer access to other parts of the city.
