About Emily

My name is Emily Shea and I’m from Chicago, Illinois.

I started real estate here in Austin in 2009 with another brokerage where they had a boot camp for their agents. You know, it got pretty overwhelming for me and you know it was kind of trial by error, I wasn’t learning much, it just discouraged me from real estate altogether and I ended up going another direction.

I got back into real estate by meeting Ryan. Ryan worked out at my gym and he had asked me if I had ever thought about real estate and I had actually had an inactive license at that time just in case that was something that I’d ever consider going back into and pursuing. Ryan had encouraged me to come talk to him and his team and I took his advice and took a meeting with Ryan.

Starting with Spyglass Realty, I had nothing but support. They knew I was a new agent and they had programs and training and direct mentorship for each agent including myself. I worked directly with the sales manager to help me learn how to take leads and call people and work on different ways to make my business successful.

I contribute my success the last 12 months to consistency. It’s all about staying in front of people. The best advice I got when I started real estate was “don’t ever leave people alone until they tell you to.” And there were so many times I felt like I was blowing up someone’s phone and leaving them voicemails, emailing them. It was a lost cause. Sure enough, one day they’d answer and one day they’d want to meet me. And now I know for sure to not let go of any of the leads I feel that maybe a failure because they come back when you least expect it and are ready.

You know, I can appreciate every client for everything different they have to offer. I really enjoy people, love people’s stories, and the first thing I do when I meet a client is find out what their story is. Probably my favorite is first-time homebuyers because I just know how overwhelming the process can be like when I bought my first home. And I really want to be able to walk someone through the whole process to make sure they are comfortable with the decisions that they are making.

The most challenging part of real estate is being my own boss. The most challenging part of real estate is growing my business. There are so many different directions I can take to growing my own business and I think is what’s worked for me is narrowing it down to what 3 things I can do really well and become an expert in those areas. Ryan’s really helped me with that through the accountability groups to show you that you can focus on something smaller and really see results.

If you’re trying to do 20 things in 1 day you’re not going to do those things really well. But if you do 3 things in 1 day you might complete them, feel really good, and have really good results. And that’s been my biggest challenge but now that I see what works best. An accountability group is designed to team up agents and hold them accountable for things they want to achieve and it’s been great because I don’t want to go back to the person that I’ve been paired up with that I didn’t do what I had told them that I would do. You hold yourselves accountable, you challenge yourselves every day, and you get done with what you haven’t yet in the day and it just helps you be productive.

I found Spyglass on Angie’s List. Emily Shea was our assigned realtor. She got right down to business but there was no “pushing or shoving”. Because we are “old” and live in assisted living her patience was phenomenal. My husband took forever to figure out what he wanted to keep! Then we had quite a bit leftover. Emily saw to it that the rest was moved out and dealt with and that the house was as presentable as it could be for a lived in 50 year old house. That was immensely helpful because we just couldn’t do it. It was finally put on the market on Friday and sold by Monday. We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. Thank you Spyglass for sending us Emily! - Max and Maggie Braffett
