Tequila 512 - An Austin Startup Story

We recently had the pleasure of interviewing my friend and neighbor, Scott Willis, founder of the local Austin Tequila company, Tequila 512.  Scott started this company about  seven years ago and he goes over the trials and tribulations of founding a startup that in the liquor industry.  What's more, the liquor has to be distilled in Mexico.  Scott started selling his liquor in his truck, pitching his product to restaurants, liquor stores and bars. And later, he won a double blind taste test!  This is truly an Austin startup success story.  Now there is hardly a restaurant or bar in town that doesn't have Tequila 512 as one of the featured liquors, and certainly not a local Austin restaurant.

If you've lived in Austin for any length of time, you'll know that that Austinites love their local businesses.  This is why startups such as Amy's Ice Cream and Cricquet Shirts thrive in Austin and then spread to nationally.  Now that Scott and his liquor company have spread across Texas, he's entered into neighboring states.  He's got a great brand and it shows.  From his first journey to the Tequila region with his wife and cofounder, Lauren, to his rebranding of the bottle using media moguls Butler Brothers, check out Scott's story above.  And be sure to subscribe to our newsletter at the top of the blog.
