About Travis Heights

The Travis Heights neighborhood is full of more than 20,000 unique homes—large historic mansions, smaller renovated bungalows and craftsmen, modern apartments, sizable yards, and detached garages with apartments. A prime location in the coveted 78704 zip code means this is one of the more expensive areas of town—expect to pay anywhere from $300,000 to $2 million. Travis Heights is known to have an eclectic and diverse population of students, artists, musicians, families and longtime residents who espouse the “Keep Austin Weird” attitude.

Mature trees shade the houses and hilly streets, which can offer great downtown and Lady Bird Lake views. There are also several major parks such as the 9-acre Stacy Park, which includes the Big Stacy spring-fed pool and the Little Stacy Park, which is connected by the Blunn Creek Greenbelt, and swimming pool, providing residents with sporting and play equipment, picnic areas, and a hike-and-bike trail.

There are features in this area that will provide you fun and exciting outdoor activities too such as a free wading pool, a playground, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and tennis courts. A playing field, picnic tables and plenty barbeque pits that are available to both residents and guests. You'll never get enough of the amenities that the area offers.

Travis Heights is one of the older neighborhoods in Austin and it is one of the most exclusive and affluent areas of South Austin. Old mansions and homes with large yards are predominant in this neighborhood along with some few apartments in the area. The area has easy access to different amenities such as trendy shops, local businesses, and dining places in South Congress Avenue. There are also several major parks in the area.

The area is fortunate enough to live within a walking distance of stores and restaurants. To get around the neighborhood, some residents use bikes. However, similar to any place, almost all residents rely on cars to get around the neighborhood to get around the rest of the city. There are bus stops available in the area for those that do not have cars.

Many residents have vegetable gardens in front of their homes since the neighborhood is also known to celebrate arts and gardening. There are several art shops in the area. An annual Travis Heights Art trail is an opportunity for residents to open their homes for art exhibits and sales.

This urban and hip area has a population that is a mixture of college students, artists, local bands, families, and longtime residents.

Boundaries

Schools

Austin ISD serves the Travis Heights neighborhood with Travis Heights Elementary (PK-5), Fulmore Middle (6-8) and Travis High School (9-12) - the oldest high school in Austin. Other institutions include the Texas School for the Deaf and St. Edward’s University.

Things to do in Travis Heights

The main thoroughfare in the Travis Heights neighborhood is South Congress (SoCo) Avenue offering eating, shopping, and people-watching with its funky boutiques, range of food establishments, nightlife, street musicians and pop-up vendors. Residents and tourists alike walk SoCo Avenue for gourmet restaurants including Vespaio, South Congress Café, Botticelli’s and Perla's Seafood and Oyster Bar, as well as more casual eateries like Guero’s and Torchy’s taco bars, Magnolia Café, Hopdoddy Burger Bar and Home Slice Pizza.

If your aim is to shop—from souvenirs to cowboy boots to antiques—you’ll find it here with Parts & Labour, Uncommon Objects, Allen’s Boots, Tesoros Trading Co., and Yard Dog Gallery. Stay awake for the music and nightlife at the Continental Club, Ego’s and C-Boy’s Heart & Soul Bar. Walk over the South Congress Avenue bridge to downtown for more entertainment. And don’t forget to stop (and smell) the bats that live under the bridge and fly out at sunset for their dinner.

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the many outdoor amenities of Stacy Park and trails surrounding Lady Bird Lake and Blunn Creek Greenbelt. Dogs can romp at the Norwood Estate off-leash dog park on Riverside. And photo enthusiasts will want to capture the “I love you so much” mural on the wall of Jo’s Coffee or “Your Essential Magnificence” sculpture on the corner of W. Live Oak Street.
